Hospice Care

Hospice is a support service that is ordered by a physician to help with the care of people with life-threatening illnesses. Its focus is not on cure, but to keep the patient comfortable and as free from pain as possible. Hospice support includes visits by registered nurses several times a week as well as visits by nurse’s aides to help with bathing and shaving. The services of a social worker are available to connect the family to local resources and to help with any family conflict or discord. A chaplain is also available to assist the patient and family with spiritual concerns that often arise in the context of an incurable condition.
As a general rule, patients may receive hospice care whether they are living at home, in an assisted living facility, or in retirement apartments. In many states they can also receive hospice if they live in a foster care home, a residential care facility, or a skilled nursing facility. Hospice does not provide day-in, day-out care, so most people who use this service also have ongoing caregivers available.
Hospice services are for patients that have decided to let nature take its course and to focus on quality of life, rather than quantity of life. These comfort care services, as well as non-curative medicines and equipment, are fully covered by Medicare. For more information about this and other types of care available, see our article about Getting Help.
