Living with Serious Illness

Mariana
"When we realized how serious Mom’s condition was, we had to face the fact that her time with us is limited.  Oh sure, we’re hoping she’ll be with us two or three years from now— but we also realize that she might not. What we’ve all had to do, Mom too, is learn to treasure every moment we have now, to live to the fullest. At the same time, we’ve had to think about the future and prepare for what might happen. It’s quite a balancing act! But we’ve been able to do it."

No one likes to hear a diagnosis that sounds serious or life-threatening. It can be a scary and confusing experience. On one hand, you want to stay hopeful and do everything you can to improve the patient’s health. On the other hand, you know you must be realistic in order to prepare adequately for the worst. For both patients and families, living with serious illness is about learning to live gracefully with this paradox.
Caring for an ailing family member can be one of the saddest and most difficult experiences in a family’s history together, but it can also be one of the most fulfilling, meaningful, and intimate experiences they’ve ever had. There is a lot of love to be shared as the patient and family learn to live fully in every moment.
We created this website to help the people of El Dorado County learn about the support services available to the seriously ill and their caregivers. Our goal is to guide you to these services so you can get help with the day-to-day demands of serious illness. (See the section on Our Services, as well as our listing of Community Programs.) This website also includes information to help you understand more about the illness and caregiving process you are going through as a family. By providing education and support, we hope we can help you live fully and enjoy the time you have left together, whether it’s years, months, weeks, or days.

Our mission at Partners In Care is to support the dignity and choice of people in our community as they walk the path of serious illness.
