Living with Serious Illness

"When we realized how serious Mom’s condition was, it made us face the fact that her time with us is limited. Oh sure, we’re hoping she’ll be with us 2-3 years from now. But we also realized that she might not…. What we’ve all had to do, Mom too, is learn to treasure every moment we do have now, to live to the fullest. At the same time, we’ve had to think about the future and prepare for what might happen. It’s quite a balancing act! But we’ve been able to do it."

No one likes hearing a diagnosis that sounds serious or life threatening. For patients and their families, this can be a scary time. Confusing too. On the one hand, you want to stay hopeful and do everything that can be done to get better. On the other, you feel pulled to be realistic, to prepare adequately for the possibility that things might not turn out as you wish. Living with serious illness, for patients and family members, is about learning to live gracefully with this paradox, these two pressures.
We have created this website to help the people of Lane County learn about the support services available to the seriously ill and their caregivers. Caring for an ailing family member can be one of the saddest and most difficult experiences in a family’s history together, but it can also be one of the most fulfilling, meaningful, and intimate experiences in a family's relationship. There is a lot of love and sharing that can be done as the patient and family learn to live fully now.
Our goal is to guide you to the services available so you can get help with the day-to-day demands of serious illness. We also have information here to assist you in understanding more about the illness and caregiving process you are going through as a family. With education and support, we hope that we can help you to live fully and enjoy the time you have left together, whether it’s years, months, weeks, or days.

We'd like to extend heartfelt thanks to our donors!
