The Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern offers combinations of services beyond the routine.
Emergency Services - services provided include temporary shelter, clothing, food, personal care items, prescriptive medications and assistance with utility bills.
Tenant Certification Program - GOMOC provides first months rent, education regarding care of an apartment, home visits, and supportive follow-up services.
Just Friends Mentoring Program - This program matches carefully screened adult volunteers with children in Orleans County who are in need of a positive role model. The program also offers an activity once a month for all children in the program.
Follow-Up Support Program - The Advocate assists clients in formulating a preventive plan to avoid repetition of the same need and promotes their independence. We help and support clients in recognizing their abilities, setting goals, developing a budget, finding job training, obtaining available child care, applying for jobs and securing an appropriate job.
Furniture Program - We accept donations of usable furniture and working appliances, match the items with our list of requests, and then distribute them to the needy families in our community.

HEAP Heat and Energy Assistance Program

This program provides grants to aid eligible households with high heating costs. Home repairs and weatherization help may be available for those who qualify for HEAP. Must be over 60 years of age or on SSI to apply with the office of the aging, if younger than 60 you may go to the Department of Social Services 585-589-7000.

Medicare "Extra Help" for Prescription Drugs

Medicare offers a program for persons with limited income who need help paying for their medications. Support can come in the form of reduced premiums, a reduced annual deductible, or reduced prescription co-payments. Even people who own their own home can qualify. Eligibility is based on income and resources other than a car or house.

A retired beneficiary (and spouse) may receive full benefits if they apply at age 65 or over. Persons applying at 62 receive reduced monthly payments. Surviving spouse is eligible for benefits at age 60, or at 50 if disabled.

This is a federal retirement insurance which provides benefits to persons who contributed to the plan when employed, and to their children adn spouses. If disabled and under 65, apply for disability benefits. Apply at a local Social Security office two or three months ahead of the time you will be elegible to receive benefits.
